Melanzana Alternatives: Two Grid Fleece Hoodies That Outperform the Melly
Whether it’s driving a Subaru, wearing a Skida hat, or sporting a Melanzana piece, some brands tend to cultivate a cult-like following that often hinges more on brand identity than on the actual quality of the products. Melanzana is one of those brands that has cultivated a massive loyal following among outdoor enthusiasts who swear by it. I’m here to challenge that notion and help you find alternatives that are more cost effective, and arguably better.
Melanzana, located in Leadville, CO, is a unique retailer for hikers, skiers, and bikers. Products can't be bought online or in-store; an appointment is necessary for customized garments made in-store by local sewers, supporting the local business.
But that’s where the fun kind of ends. Aside from the fact that it’s virtually impossible to get an appointment the same day, or even week - Melanzana products are expensive. Their signature hoodies go for way over $100 - you may be able to get an irregular piece or a clearance item for $80 or so.
I went to the store several times and saw their products up close. The fleece in their hoodies does not seem worth the $150 price. It's thin and feels like it will shed or break in the wash.
That said grid fleeces do have their merits—they provide excellent breathability and moisture-wicking while trapping warmth in their grid-like channels, making them ideal for high-output activities in cooler conditions. Their lightweight design and superior packability make them a go-to mid-layer for hikers, climbers, and skiers who need efficient thermoregulation without excess bulk.
Here are two Melanzana alternatives that I think are better made and cost less.
