Cozy Rock Cabin: Coastal Maine Gem
There are vacation rentals that you book simply because they are convenient or fit within your budget, but then there are those destination Airbnbs that you eagerly wait to become available. The Cozy Rock Cabin in Freeport, Maine, definitely falls into the latter category. A few years ago, I discovered a cabin designer in Ontario, Pete, who ran an account called the Raven House Design. The Raven House was a small, off-grid cabin, similar in design to the one you see here. While today there seems to be an ever-growing variety of cabins, casitas, treehouses, and earth ships, seven years ago, it was still somewhat of a novelty. When I learned that Janice and Sean were working on a Raven-inspired design, I instantly followed them on Instagram. Watching the empty lot transform into a boreal coastal Maine oasis was incredible. I could go on and on about the inspirational building process and how insightful Janice has been in her content.
Coastal Maine Oasis
Situated remarkably close to Freeport and the greater Portland area, Cozy Rock Cabin is very close to a lot of attractions in the area. That said, the location of the cabin is so secluded at the same time, that you truly feel like you’re somewhere deep in the Maine woods, miles away from civilization.
The cabin isn’t large, but its open floor plan creates a surprisingly spacious and comfortable atmosphere. The main level features a combined kitchen and living area, all beneath a tall, vaulted ceiling that invites natural light. Adjacent to this space are a bathroom and a laundry room, with a master bedroom tucked away behind an elegant wooden door partition.
Ascending to the second floor reveals one of the cabin's most charming elements, what I often refer to as the “book nook.” This space serves as a second bedroom, but some visitors, it becomes a warm and sunny retreat, perfect for relaxation. Our time in this area was tranquil, making it an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy quiet moments together.
Everything in this cabin is meticulously curated—from the art on the walls to the plates in the kitchen, the linens, and even the very materials of the cabin itself. If you explore the archives on @cozyrockcabin during the build, you’ll gain insight into the immense thought and care Janice has invested in every detail. Many items in the cabin are sourced from local Maine, New England, and American companies. And yes, the screen door at the entrance is intentionally designed to squeak, adding to that quintessential “Maine camp” vibe. The interior of the cabin is stunning, refreshing, and energizing, perfectly embodying its name. It’s COZY.
But perhaps the most fundamental aspect that is so incredible about this build is the land and how the cabin integrates with it. The positioning of the cabin was carefully planned - the massive moss-covered rock in the back of the cabin is just as much an amenity of the cabin as the cabin itself.
We spent a few days here across different seasons, and this place feels like a little forest paradise, no matter the time of year. Summer and fall offer a lush, protected atmosphere, filled with the sounds of owls and a fresh forest breeze rolling through the cozy outdoor area. Winter brings tranqulity, providing a perfect opportunity to warm up in the jacuzzi or by the inviting wood stove indoors.
